You may find it a bit surprising that I’ve created a guide to coffee pods, and frankly, so do I. While this is certainly not a brewing method that I personally use, I cannot ignore the popularity and convenience of pod brewing.

Why Pod Brewing?

Two words: convenience and variety. If you’re in a hurry or just don’t want to deal with all of the logistics of ground coffee, pods may be the brewing method for you. We recommend a variety pack to get started!

How Does it Work?

As promised, this method is by far the most simple on here. The only catch is if you are packing your own pods; even then, I can’t say that it’s too difficult!

(Optional) Step 1: Pack your reusable pod

Clean out your reusable pod and fill it nearly to the top with grounds.

Step 2: Fill the reservoir and put in your pod

Ensure that your machine is plugged in and filled with enough water for either a pot or a single cup. Pop open the part of the machine where the pod goes, this varies by brand and model. Remove the old pod and insert the new one, then firmly close on the new pod.

Step 3: Select your mode, then enjoy!

This step really depends on the model that you get. Some of the pricier machines offer modes that allow you to make cappuccinos and specialty beverages! Select you brew, push the button, wait until the cycle completes, and enjoy!

Before You Buy

What Do You Really Need Out of a Machine?

There are hundreds of options for pod brewers out there. These can range from a few dollars to a few hundred, so really think about what you need out of a machine! Large capacity, tons of options, small footprint, simple? These machines can last a long time, so if you find yourself buying a cup of coffee a day that can be made by a pod machine, consider buying a pricier model!

Coffee Pod Machines Are Like Printers — Consider the Recurring Cost!

Per cup, pod coffee machines may be cheaper than going to Starbucks. However, they’re still more expensive than just buying a filter and beans! If price is a concern, think about getting the reusable pods to save a bit of cash. But more importantly, find pods that you enjoy and then order in bulk!
